Overview
Regular cleaning of the sofa fabric
You should clean your sofa more often so that it stays beautiful for a long time. Especially the upholstery fabric needs regular care. The frame of the sofa is not particularly demanding.
Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions! Before you clean your fabric sofa, be sure to carefully read the manufacturer’s care instructions. Follow them and do not experiment. Otherwise, during the warranty period, you may lose your warranty rights.
Link-Tip:
If you want to know how to remove certain stains from a sofa, then you’ve come to the right place.
Remove the dust by tapping
Occasional patting of the upholstery is good for him. You remove the dust with it. The upholstery material is loosened up and ventilated. A sofa with a casual upholstery, which is easy to sink into, should be regularly beaten out or shaken up a bit. Dust collects more easily in the folds.
Clean the cover of a fabric sofa
Whether you have a fabric sofa or a leather sofa, proper care will increase the durability of your sofa cover and keep it beautiful for a long time. Cleaning is a very simple routine task. The following procedure is suitable for almost all cover materials:
Vacuum sofa regularly
Many crumbs, sand and dust are deposited on the cover. With further use, these particles are rubbed deeper into the fabric. This puts a strain on the material.
But dirt does not only collect on the seat surfaces. It also collects in the cracks between the seats. Often, a sofa consists of two or more components. This is usually the case with sofas with a recamiere. It is best to loosen this connection in order to be able to carry out a thorough cleaning. Maybe you will also find one or the other missing household item.
What applies to fabric also applies to leather. Fine dirt particles collect in crevices and seams and can often not be removed by simply wiping. If you don’t want to use a vacuum cleaner on your leather sofa, you can alternatively try to remove the dirt with a soft brush. When using the vacuum cleaner, make sure you use the right attachment: there are upholstery nozzles with soft pads that are especially suitable for flat fabrics. A brush attachment can also be used for velour and leather. It should not be too hard, so that the material is not roughened.
Important tip for suction:
Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction power!
Sucking in the cover can cause it to overstretch. Especially on sofas with casual upholstery and only loosely stretched cover this happens easily.
How do I vacuum my sofa?
- Set vacuum cleaner to low suction power
- Use upholstery nozzle
- vacuum between the crevices
- for better cleaning detach sofa parts from each other if necessary
Fabric sofa damp wipe
Occasionally wipe the sofa with a damp cloth over its entire surface. The cloth should only be damp and not wet. However, pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions here as well. If necessary, he explicitly advises against damp cleaning of the fabric sofa.
For wet cleaning, it is best to use lukewarm water and a clean, wrung-out, lint-free cloth. Alternatively, use a wiping leather. Colored cloths should not be used, as they can leave visible stains on light-colored covers.
Manufacturer recommends. However, cleaning can also be done with just a little neutral soap. Please make sure that the soap dissolves completely in the water!
After you have wrung out the cloth well, wipe slowly and with light pressure over the cover. For velour covers, it is best to wipe each area once from right to left and once from left to right. After damp cleaning, the cover should dry completely before use.
How do I wipe my sofa?
- Cloth damp, not wet
- lukewarm water
- lint-free cloth
- no colored cloths
- Cleaning agent: recommended by the manufacturer
- Alternative cleaning agent: neutral soap
- wipe slowly, light pressure
- Allow cover to dry before use
Clean fabric sofa with tap water or distilled water?
Some sofa manufacturers hedge and recommend cleaning the cover with distilled water. Since tap water contains lime, after drying could appear stains and rims on the cover.
When cleaning the fabric sofa with a damp rag, there should not normally be any soggy spots. So, if you stick to it, the risk of lime scale edges is quite low. However, if you live in an area with particularly chalky water, don’t take any chances and use distilled water. Alternatively, use boiled water that has cooled down.
Cleaning sofa with baking soda
Your fabric sofa you can also do with the well-known home remedy soda. The soda powder has disinfecting properties, acts against annoying dust mites and odors and even removes stains. The cleaning can be done wet but also dry.
Dry cleaning with baking soda
Simply spread the baking soda powder generously over the sofa and let it work its magic for one night. You simply vacuum up the remains later.
Wet cleaning with soda
If refreshing with dry baking soda powder does not bring the desired result, you can also carefully rub the powder into the sofa fabric with a moistened sponge. After it dries, simply vacuum up the remains.
Soda against stubborn stains
You can fight really stubborn stains with a mixture of 3 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of water. Slather the paste on the sofa fabric, rub it in lightly, let it develop its superpowers overnight and vacuum up the remains in the morning.

Microfiber couch cleaning
Sofas with microfiber as a cover are bought with pleasure. Especially for those who are lazy about care or pet owners, this sofa cover is ideal.
Over time, you will not be able to avoid cleaning the seats, armrests and back parts. But don’t worry – cleaning a microfiber couch is very easy. The smooth, dense fibers are best cleaned with warm water. Here, of course, again the distilled water is best suited, because it does not leave lime scale marks.
Tip: If you do not have distilled water in the house, you can alternatively use boiled water. But be careful: let it cool down considerably after boiling. Your skin and your sofa will not tolerate boiling water.
If you find greasy stains on your microfiber couch, add a small splash of dishwashing liquid to the water.
Start cleaning when you have all the cleaning materials at hand. Work on the stain with a sponge or a soft brush, carefully spreading the water (soapy water) and massaging it into the surface. Be especially careful not to put the sofa under water. The stain is on the surface of the fabric, not inside the sofa.
Complete the cleaning by following up with clean water and then dabbing off excess moisture with a lint-free cloth.
Being quick makes all the difference. If a mishap happens, don’t fret about it for too long. The best cleaning results are achieved when you start cleaning the microfiber sofa immediately.
Cleaning kit for sofas with mirco fiber cover
Of course, you can also buy special cleaning kits for your sofa with mirco fiber cover. Even the most stubborn dirt of all kinds, even oil and grease stains can usually be removed with them.
Clean the sofa frame
You rarely need to dust the parts of the frame. Soft cloths or, with the appropriate attachment, the vacuum cleaner are best suited for this. Wooden parts should be treated with wood care products such as oil or furniture polish. However, be very careful here so that you do not contaminate the sofa cover.
The sofa bed: Attention risk of mold
After using a sofa bed, let it air out for a while before turning it back into a sofa. This will prevent mold or mildew stains that may be difficult or impossible to remove later.
