A new sofa is often not immediately cut open to see the installed materials, such as the zig zag spring. Here you can only rely on the manufacturer’s specifications and the expertise of the seller.

In the following, we will give you detailed information about the zig zag spring and other frequently used suspensions. The 5 examples of different sofa designs shed light on the subject.

Why is it called zig zag spring?

The zig zag springing is also often called nosag springing. Sometimes it is also called snake spring. It gets its name because of its typical wave shape.

What material is this type of spring made of and how is it installed?

A zig zag spring is made of hardened spring steel wire and delivered to the sofa manufacturer on a roll. The higher quality and thicker the wire, the more dimensionally stable and corrosion resistant it is. Thin zig zag spring is often installed in inexpensive sofas. There is no minimum thickness.

Before installing the suspension, special brackets made of metal or plastic are nailed or stapled to the underside of the sofa. The spring wire is taken from the roll with the help of a side cutter of appropriate length and hooked into the bracket on one side. A tensioning tool is used to clamp it into the bracket on the opposite side.

When all the zig zag springs are installed, a layer of felt is placed over them. It later protects the upholstery material against friction and slippage.

Range of application and advantages

Pressure, as it occurs when sitting, can be better distributed. In addition, the degree of hardness of the seating surfaces can be adjusted by tensioning the corrugated wire. Additional layers of springs and a high-quality foam contribute to a high level of seating comfort.

The zig zag spring is used as under-springing in the seat area of sofas and chairs. Sometimes also in the back area. Here, however, textile belts are used more often.

For whom is the zig zag spring suitable?

Zig zag springs are basically suitable for those who value perfect seating comfort. Especially older people and people with intervertebral disc problems will appreciate the supporting effect of this type of spring.

What suspension is best for sofas?

Of course, important for high-quality seating comfort are also high-quality materials. This means that high-quality wire is used for the construction of the spring systems. The foams used, such as polyether foam for the upholstered area, should also have a high density.

We present very simple to very high quality upholstery structures.

Very simple: sofa construction with plywood panel instead of suspension

The zig zag sofa spring - explanation with 5 examples.
On the plywood board is a simple foam

The most simple structure does not require suspension. On the wooden structure, which gives the sofa its shape, simply screw a sheet of plywood. Then, on top of it is glued foam element. Often, this foam is of simple quality with a very low density. The seating comfort and dimensional stability of such a sofa is rather inferior.

Simple: the structure of a sofa with zig zag spring

The zig zag spring brings a more comfortable sitting feeling

Instead of the plywood board here is stretched wave springs on the wooden structure. The individual, wave-shaped wires are stretched over the shorter side of the sofa in hooks made of metal or plastic and fixed. A layer of felt or similar material is placed over this zig zag spring to protect the foam installed on it against friction and slipping into the spring layer.

High quality: sofa with zig zag spring and spring core

The zig zag sofa spring - explanation with 5 examples.
A spring core is installed on the wave base.

In the next higher level, the zig zag spring is followed by an innerspring core. Both types of springing are laced together. The individual springs can distribute the point loads well and provide increased seating comfort compared to the previous structure. The upper layer is made of foam such as a cold foam.

Very high quality: sofa with box springs

The zig zag sofa spring - explanation with 5 examples.
A very high quality upholstered structure: A box spring structure was placed on the bottom springing. This consists of bonell springs, pocket springs and high-quality cold foam.

The highest quality structure consists of the already mentioned zig zag springs and a box spring on top. A box spring always consists of at least two layers of springs. Bonell springs are often used in the lower layer. These springs provide the basic stability of the system and are area elastic. This means that they distribute the pressure of the person sitting on the sofa over a large area.

Individual springs sewn into fabric pockets form the next layer of the box spring. A circumferential steel wire prevents the individual springs from slipping sideways. This layer is point elastic. This means that the individual springs adapt to the contour of the sitter and support him accordingly. The top layer consists of a high-quality foam with a high density.

Repair sofa with wave base

If at some point the sofa sags or the supportive effect of the springs wears off, even the untrained can replace the springs. The replacement springs for the sofa, couch, corner sofa or armchair can often be purchased at the local interior decorator or upholsterer. There you will also find the necessary accessories such as retaining clips and nails. However, wave springs can also be purchased online at Amazon.
