The Chesterfield sofa, along with the modern designs of Le Corbusier, Eames and van der Rohe, is one of the top pieces of furniture design. It is probably even the most famous sofa design in the world. This is because the classic design has been around for over 300 years. Theories about the origin of Chesterfield design abound. Most historians refer to Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield. The latter had a penchant for fine things in life and beautiful furniture had taken a liking to him.

Unfortunately, other than a few stories, there are few provable connections of this man to this iconic piece of furniture. The English furniture maker Robert Adam was commissioned by him to design and build this sofa.

Design features of a Chesterfield sofa

To recognize a Chesterfield sofa is not difficult. The knotted diamond pattern with leather buttons and the same height of the back and armrests immediately catch the eye. Mainly there are two- and three-person sofas and armchairs. Récamières are uncommon.

History and production

Originally Chesterfield sofas were handmade in England from leather. The leather is folded in a diamond shape and then attached to the beech wood frame with leather buttons. This traditional craft technique is called capitoning or stitching. Nowadays it is also known as English stitching, which shows its origin. It gives a characteristic look to the upholstered furniture. The seat consists of upholstered suspension.

Chesterfield is a great and stylish sofa

As with many furniture designs, it is not surprising that the Chesterfield has undergone some minor adjustments over the years. Today’s modern interpretation of this classic is undoubtedly quite different from the original design from the late 17th century. It is only in the last 150 years that greater similarities can be seen.

Today, when we think of a Chesterfield sofa, we have images of deep buttoned traditional leather sofas with thick armrests in mind. However, by definition, any sofa with arms and back at the same height can be classified as a Chesterfield design.

Chesterfield sofa in modern design

Considering its age, the Chesterfield sofa has a very versatile design. It is known from gentlemen’s clubs and libraries, and sometimes from public buildings.

In recent years, this classic design is making a comeback. The classic deep buttoned antique leather is still the cover of choice, however vintage leather and velvet are now also in demand. Especially retro-look leather and lush velvet give the Chesterfield design a new twist and extend the charm of this versatile classic.

Seating comfort of a Chesterfield sofa

Modern fabrics and feather cushions have made the somewhat uncomfortable-looking Chesterfield sofa much more comfortable to sit on. Despite its solid exterior, the Chesterfield is a sofa that can be surprisingly comfortable. If you put some cozy pillows and a sheepskin or two on it, it instantly becomes a cozy sofa. Besides, these decorative elements still look pretty chic in combination.

Variants of the Chesterfield sofa

In addition to the classic Chesterfield sofa with loose seat cushions, there is a special form. In the sofa called Victorian Chesterfield, the seat cushion is worked as part of the upholstery and is firmly attached to the frame.

Buy a Chesterfield Sofa

Traditional craftsmanship and classic designs probably never go out of style. That’s why you can’t go wrong with buying a Chesterfield.

Of course, you can buy a Chesterfield sofa on the Internet. Here there are many suppliers who offer this traditional sofa form. There is a choice for every budget. Of course, not all sofas are of the same quality.

Configure Chesterfield as you wish

In some webshops you can configure your Chesterfield yourself. It will then be traditionally handmade just for you. First choose the size of the sofa and then design it according to your wishes. You can often choose between many types and colors of leather. In addition, there are different foot colors and nails.

Since the sofa is built by hand, special requests can often be implemented. Around the configuration, these manufacturers are usually also very customer-oriented and offer many services. The free shipping of fabric samples and detailed advice on your questions make the purchase pleasant and personal.

How to care for a Chesterfield sofa?

To enjoy the handmade sofa for a long time, it must be properly maintained. Your sofa should be dusted regularly. The best way to do this is with a lint-free cloth. This will reduce the penetration of dirt into the leather.

Use a vacuum cleaner to carefully remove dust and dirt from the folds and stitching. You should also clean the leather from time to time with warm water and neutral soap. Once a month, treat the leather with a recommended leather care product. The care product protects the leather from cracking and drying out.

With high-quality leather sofas, the surface changes over time. A so-called patina develops. It is typical in the aging process. Avoid direct sunlight or strong light sources. A location directly next to a heater can also damage the leather.
